A Review of the Sixpenny Home Devyn Sectional
This is what I chose after evaluating every couch on the internet.
When we moved to our new, Northern California small town a year ago, it was a new chapter for us of being settled. The prior 5 years were spent waiting to see where we would end up with my husband’s job. What that meant for our home was always shopping for cheaper options, because we knew we would eventually move, no matter where we were. I aimed for cute, but lower end, just in case the piece didn’t work in whatever place we lived next. We lived in 3 different houses in 4.5 years, so our furniture couldn’t be too valuable. I also didn’t spend a lot of time decorating the walls due to the inevitability of having to undecorate them.
This year we finally were about to buy a house and settle in, IE buy furniture that is meant to last us instead of meet an immediate need. I have been dreaming of this day for *literal years* so I searched every corner of the internet looking for the perfect couch for us. I read Reddit threads, watched Tiktok videos (I don’t have tiktok), searched Instagram tags, and read design blogs. I took in all of the information I could find on the options available to me.
We only have one sitting area in our house, no den or family room, just one living room. So I wanted something that is good for entertaining but most importantly, cozy for us. In a dream world, you have a big cozy family couch in your basement or den, and a shallower couch in your living room / entertaining area. Alas, we live in California and can only afford one living room, so we opted for cozy as we will be the primary users of the couch, and ample seating space.
My priorities in our couch search were on the ultimate lounge and cozy space for us, aesthetically pleasing as I’m going to be staring at it every day, easy to clean because we have two boys and a large dog, and a lot of seating space so that we can easily entertain a larger crowd of people. I also really tried to avoid synthetic fibers for the covering of the couch, like polyester, honing in on a lightweight fabric like linen. I was shocked at how hard it was for me to find non-synthetic fibers, and when I did, customizing a couch with linen on sites like RH and Pottery Barn sent the price way up. (Here is an interesting podcast from the Ancient Health Podcast on why fabric material matters and can impact our bodies.)
For filling I really wanted to like down, the more natural option, but after previously having a down couch that I thought was extremely uncomfortable because it was so easily flattened, and needed constant fluffing, I decided the filling could be poly. I’m not usually so practical, choosing the synthetic option over the natural one, but I also couldn’t stand to spend thousands of dollars on something that would soon be uncomfortable.
I ordered swatches from West Elm, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, RH, Maiden Home, and Sixpenny. The fabrics alone really narrowed down my search to RH, Maiden Home, and Sixpenny as the other companies had a very limited selection of natural fiber fabrics. I loved Maiden Home’s couch options, but the photos and reviews were too limited for me to feel comfortable purchasing. And my custom-built RH couch was coming in around $16,000, which was a pill that I couldn’t swallow. Aside from it being too much for even me, who easily justifies a lasting, high-quality purchase, getting my husband on board with that price would’ve been like trying to hike Mt Everest carrying a boulder. So, Sixpenny seemed like the best option. A huge couch, at nearly a third of the price of Restoration Hardware.
I have been admiring the Devyn Sectional from afar for two years. It is such a gorgeous couch, and it looks insanely comfortable and cozy. I’ve just never had a big enough living room space to house the couch, and per above, have never been settled enough to justify it either.
Even after deciding I was likely getting the Devyn, I sat on ordering it for days, just to give myself space to change my mind. I was worried about the color being off, and was super worried about the comfort of the couch and it being too soft and unsupportive. I finally pulled the trigger in November and waited for my Devyn L-Sectional in Oat Flour to arrive.
They were right on time, arriving at the tail end of the estimated arrival and delivery window of 10 weeks. The couch is extremely cozy, but with enough firmness to not feel like you can’t get out of it. The color is perfection, warming up our living room that struggles to get sunlight in the wintertime. It immediately became our family’s favorite gathering spot, and is a good blend of comfort and support. I am so satisfied with my decision to get the vegan poly fill, as I can immediately see the difference in the comfort level and support of the material over down filling. Many times I have purchase panic after buying a substantial piece for our home, but since this couch has entered our door, I’ve felt nothing but peace and satisfaction with the purchase.
PS Here is my Instagram reel of the couch if you want to see it in our house.
